China wants 'one-child' compensation over NZ quake

Mar 14, 2011

WELLINGTON (New Zealand) - CHINA has asked New Zealand to consider special compensation to parents of Chinese students killed in an earthquake last month because their loss was magnified under China's one-child policy.
Seven Chinese students have been identified among the 166 confirmed deaths in the quake that devastated Christchurch city on Feb 22, and as many as 20 are still missing.
Chinese Embassy official Cheng Lei said on Monday that Chinese quake victims had lost not only their only child but also a future breadwinner.
He said New Zealand should consider providing additional financial assistance to those families.
New Zealand tertiary education minister Steven Joyce said it would be difficult under New Zealand law to provide special compensation to one group of victims. -- AP

[When did the Chinese become as litiguous as the Americans? And unreasonable? Did the Chinese Govt provided special compensation to parents of children lost in the Szechuan earthquake? How is the earthquake the responsibility of the NZ govt to provide compensation to victims?

The one-child policy is a policy of the Chinese govt. The "magnified" loss is a direct consequence of the Chinese Govt policy. Thus NZ govt if liable at all would be liable for "normal" compensation. Any "special" compensation as a result of China's policy should be borne by the Chinese govt.]
